It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Dirk Siedlecki, co-founder and long-time President of the Friends of Jacksonville’s Historic Cemetery, on January 31, 2023, after a brief illness.
Prior to co-founding the FOJHC, Dirk was Chairman of the Jacksonville Boosters Club Cemetery Committee. The FOJHC was founded in 2008 as a 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit organization and successor to the Boosters cemetery committee to raise tax-deductible funds for restoration projects in the Jacksonville Historic Cemetery. Through it all, Dirk remained a loyal member of the Jacksonville Boosters Club which, upon Dirk’s passing, published the following article in the Jacksonville Review (March 2023) in tribute to an extraordinary man and his legendary accomplishments on behalf of the residents of Jacksonville and their historic cemetery:
"In Memory of Dirk Siedlecki: Jacksonville Loses a Consummate Volunteer"
One of Dirk’s signature accomplishments was Meet the Pioneers, the annual living history tours program which he produced for fourteen seasons in the cemetery. Many of the Meet the Pioneers performances were video recorded by Dirk’s good friend, local historian and author, Bill Miller. Bill, a long-time history columnist in the Rogue Valley, and author of Silent City on the Hill, Jacksonville, Oregon’s Historic Cemetery, wrote the following tribute to Dirk which appeared in the Rogue Valley Tribune (now Rogue Valley Times) on February 22, 2023:
"HISTORY SNOOP: Goodbye Dirk Siedlecki, my friend"
Videos of Meet the Pioneers performances, including the most recent (Meet The Pioneers 2022), may be viewed at:
"YouTube (Oregon History Tales)"
Donations in Dirk’s memory for restoration and educational purposes in the Jacksonville Historic Cemetery may be made to: FOJHC, PO Box 1541, Jacksonville, OR 97530.
